Sigourney Weaver in Political Animals

Sigourney Weaver, having previously played a First Lady on the big screen in Dave, is heading back into the political arena as the star of Political Animals, a series debuting on USA Network this summer.

Produced by Greg Berlanti (Dirty Sexy Money) and Laurence Mark (Jerry Maguire), the six-hour series finds Weaver playing Elaine Barrish, a divorced former First Lady who immerses herself in her new job as Secretary of State as she rebounds from the dissolution of her marriage and losing the presidential nomination.

As she does so, Barrish leans heavily on her son Doug (played by Lone Star's James Wolk), an ambitious politico who serves as her chief of staff but is tormented by his yet-to-be-cast twin brother’s struggles with addiction. Brittany Ishibashi (Ghostfacers) plays Doug’s fiancée.

Also in Barrish's orbit are her philandering ex-husband (who is still in love with her) and an aggressive D.C. journalist bent on destroying her career.

A two-time Golden Globe winner and a multiple Oscar nominee, Weaver's limited recent TV credits include the 2009 Lifetime movie Prayers for Bobby, for which she earned an Emmy nod, and the role of a therapist/God in an episode of Berlanti's Eli Stone.
